She has a couple with love-interest Derek Luke in “Sparkle,” and recently filmed another one for her next movie. Movies, however, offer one experience Sparks isn’t sure she’ll ever adjust to: a big-screen kiss. She’s already working on a new independent film, “The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete,” co-starring another “Idol” alum, Oscar-winner Jennifer Hudson. ![]() Sparks won’t give up music, but she says she does see movies as an artistic avenue she’ll continue to pursue. On the other hand, Sparks says, singing as part of a group was a revelation after performing as a solo artist: “There’s a lot less pressure on any one individual when you’re in a group,” she says. “I had a little of that when I was doing ‘In the Heights’ on Broadway,” she says. The whole movie was a huge learning experience for me. Though Sparks had acted in high-school musicals and performed for millions on TV on “Idol” and then in music videos, the Phoenix-born singer says she still had a lot to learn about performing in front of a camera. “So to get to work with her in this intimate setting, to do scenes where we were yelling at each other, and then holding hands with her … I just loved her.” “I was somebody who had listened to Whitney’s music and tried to emulate her,” Sparks recalled. She tries to keep her daughters out of show business and, in an act of tough love, throws them out of her house when they disobey.įor Sparks, 22, the movie marks the next step in a career that was launched in 2006 when she was named the then-youngest winner on “American Idol.” Her love for Houston makes her feel all the more privileged to have the starring role in “Sparkle.” Houston plays their strict, churchgoing mother, Emma, a onetime singer whose dreams crashed and burned - and who turned her life around.
